The Texas Department of Corrections (now the Texas Department of Criminal Justice) manages offenders in state prisons, state jails and contracted private correctional facilities. The agency also provides funding and certain oversight of community supervision and is responsible for the supervision of offenders released from prison on parole or mandatory supervision. These training files consist of a series of programs developed by the Department of Corrections with funds provided by the Texas Criminal Justice Council for use in training employees. Each program set contains a slide show, audio tape, transcript/guide for use with the audio and visual materials. Most sets also contain specialized instruction guides. The materials themselves are undated, but slides containing printed publications show dates of 1973, so the programs were likely created between 1973 and 1975. These are specialized training programs dealing with the corrections industry. Most of the programs consist of multi-volume sets, with each volume discussing different topics within that program. Programs present in this training series are Communications, Contraband, Counseling, Criminal Justice, Legal Aspects of Corrections, Legal Aspects of Emergency Situations, Officer-Inmate Relations, Prison Management, Race Relations, and Treatment.
